Aprons, Aprons, Aprons

Just as I wear “many hats” in life, so I possess many aprons. I have an apron for working at the store, one for working in the kitchen, one for working in the garden, another for when I’m painting furniture and I have one just for hosting our annual St. Patty’s Day party. I know someone who has an apron for collecting chicken eggs. My brother has an apron for his woodworking and a good friend has an apron for when she’s in her art studio. My grandmother, back in the 1960’s, wore an apron nearly all day over her “house dress,” only removing it for the evening dinner hour or for going out.

Aprons have been around for hundreds of years. Let’s talk about us women. Even into the early 1900’s, many common folk only had a couple dresses so it was imperative to protect clothing from stains and damage while performing certain tasks. Inversely, during my time working in a coffee shop, putting on a freshly laundered apron for each shift not only protected our personal clothing but, more importantly, kept any dirt or germs that we carried on our clothing from contaminating the food and drink we prepared for customers.

I once heard a story about a very busy mom and housewife who used her apron to get a few moments of peace and quiet. She would sit down on a kitchen chair and lift her apron to cover her face and head. She instructed everyone in the house that it was in their best interest to leave her completely alone for at least a few minutes when they found her thus!

Kitchen Kuriosities carries several styles of aprons. We have aprons for egg collecting, crafting, gardening, cooking, and grilling. And a fresh shipment of designs is arriving in July!
