Aprons, Aprons, Aprons

Just as I wear “many hats” in life, so I possess many aprons. I have an apron for working at the store, one for working in the kitchen, one for working in the garden, another for when I’m painting furniture and I have one just for hosting our annual St. Patty’s Day party. I know someone who has an apron for collecting chicken eggs. My brother has an apron for his woodworking and a good friend has an apron for when she’s in her art studio. My grandmother, back in the 1960’s, wore an apron nearly all day over her “house dress,” only removing it for the evening dinner hour or for going out.

Aprons have been around for hundreds of years. Let’s talk about us women. Even into the early 1900’s, many common folk only had a couple dresses so it was imperative to protect clothing from stains and damage while performing certain tasks. Inversely, during my time working in a coffee shop, putting on a freshly laundered apron for each shift not only protected our personal clothing but, more importantly, kept any dirt or germs that we carried on our clothing from contaminating the food and drink we prepared for customers.

I once heard a story about a very busy mom and housewife who used her apron to get a few moments of peace and quiet. She would sit down on a kitchen chair and lift her apron to cover her face and head. She instructed everyone in the house that it was in their best interest to leave her completely alone for at least a few minutes when they found her thus!

Kitchen Kuriosities carries several styles of aprons. We have aprons for egg collecting, crafting, gardening, cooking, and grilling. And a fresh shipment of designs is arriving in July!

Green Saves Green

Our store is an extension of our passion for the environment. This year we have begun donating 5% of the profit from Kitchen Kuriosities sales of earth-friendly cleaning supplies to Green Saves Green, a local area nonpartisan, all-volunteer, homegrown organization dedicated to protecting our local environment. They believe our children deserve to inherit a clean, safe, and beautiful world. Since 2017, they have been partnering with area citizens, students, teachers, community leaders, and civic groups to monitor water quality, plant trees, pick up litter, improve trails, provide outdoor education, and much more!

The Humble Rolling Pin

The Humble Rolling Pin

Whether for rolling out buttery pie crust or crushing savory spices, the rolling pin has had a special function in the kitchens of the world for centuries. A baker’s skill is often measured by their flare with a rolling pin. The dough must be mixed just right, not too sticky or too stiff, for rolling just right, not too thick or too thin. And there is always the danger of “overworking” the dough in the process! Yet this humble instrument has not changed much over the years.

Over 30 years ago I received my first vintage rolling pin from my grandmother and now my collection is on display at the shop! You’ll find over 100 examples of rolling pins at Kitchen Kuriosities!--Pam

The Kitchen

Life emanates from our kitchens. Schedules and menus are planned. Household budgets are considered. Food preparation tools and equipment are gathered, then stored or showcased for ease of use or for their aesthetic contribution. Recipes are collected and await their use. Dishware of various designs is hung on walls and displayed behind glass panes like prized art only to become tools for eating.

There are the sounds and the smells. The grinder before a fresh pot of coffee reveals an earthy Asia Pacific bean one can sense from a second-floor bedroom. The whistle of the tea kettle is followed by the lavender scent of steeping Earl Grey. The bubble of simmering soup sends the aroma of garlic and onion to remote parts of the house. The oven timer beeps as the scent of perfectly browned cinnamon coffee cake signals, “I’m ready!.”

Then there’s the main characters! The cook, the eaters, the people…creating, planning, growing, loving…all while hovering over a cup of tea, a crock pot of chili, a plate of chocolate chip cookies, a glass of wine. Has any of this REALLY changed for generations?!! Nope.

Kitchen Kuriosities is about mixing the past with the present, mixing old kitchen memories with new cooking and dining experiences. Discover a new gadget for slicing and dicing. Find an old casserole dish or copper bottom pot to make your grandma’s recipe. Our vintage wares are practical and ready to incorporate into your kitchen or dining room. Experience the feel of an artisan crafted cooking spoon. Have fun with old and new kitchen linens. You can outfit your kitchen with thrift your grandmother would approve of, with a touch of whimsy even!

We also look for sustainable products, regional products made in the USA and Fair-Trade artisan wares.
